DORI's Anti-Tarnish & Re-Plating Warranty, Explained

DORI's Anti-Tarnish & Re-Plating Warranty, Explained

If you've ever opened a jewellery box after a few months and found your favourite pair of earrings looking dull, yellowed, or faintly green at the edges, you already know the problem. It's not bad luck. It's not how you wore it. It's almost always the material.

Most affordable jewellery tarnishes because it's built on a thin layer of gold over a base metal that reacts badly to moisture, sweat, and air. The gold wears off fast because there was never much of it to begin with. We built DORI specifically to get around this, and we back that up with an actual warranty (not just a marketing line).

Why jewellery tarnishes in the first place

Tarnishing happens when the metal underneath your plating reacts with oxygen, moisture, or the natural oils and sweat on your skin. Cheaper jewellery uses thin "flash" plating (sometimes a fraction of a micron) over base metals that corrode easily. Once that thin layer wears through (and it does, fast, with daily wear), you're left wearing the base metal directly, which is when things start turning green or grey.

The fix isn't a magic coating. It's two things: a thicker layer of real gold, and a base metal that's actually built to support it.

What "anti-tarnish" means at DORI

Every DORI piece starts with either 925 sterling silver or brass, finished with a real layer of 18kt gold thick enough (2.5 microns which is 10 times thicker the usual standard) that it isn't just sitting on the surface waiting to rub off in a week. That's the difference between jewellery that looks gold for a photo and jewellery that still looks gold a year from now.

It also means you can wear your pieces the way you actually live — through workdays, workouts, humid commutes without babysitting them.

How the re-plating warranty actually works

Here's the part most demi-fine brands don't offer: if the gold layer on your piece does eventually wear down with regular use, DORI's warranty covers re-plating, so the piece comes back looking the way it did on day one — instead of you having to replace it entirely.

In practice, that means:

  • Your piece is covered for 2 years from the date of purchase
  • Re-plating is offered at no cost within the warranty window
  • You simply reach out through email/ WhatsApp to start a claim

This is the kind of warranty you'd expect from fine jewellery, applied to something you can actually afford to wear every single day.

A few habits that make it last even longer

Even with a thick gold layer, a little care goes a long way:

  • Take pieces off before swimming, showering, or intense workouts
  • Apply perfume and lotion before putting on your jewellery, not after
  • Store pieces separately, ideally in a soft pouch, away from direct sunlight

We've written a full guide on this — [linked here] — but the short version is: your DORI pieces are built to handle daily wear. They just don't love direct contact with chlorine, alcohol-based products, or sitting in a damp bathroom drawer.

Why this matters when you're shopping demi-fine

A lot of demi-fine jewellery brands talk about "quality" in vague terms. What actually matters is specific: what's the base metal, how thick is the plating, and what happens when it eventually wears down? If a brand can't answer that last question clearly, that's worth noticing.

We'd rather you know exactly what you're getting — and know that if it wears down, we'll bring it back to life instead of asking you to buy it again.
