Gold vermeil is built to handle everyday wear but "everyday" still has a few rules. Treat it right and a piece can look new for years. Treat it carelessly and even good-quality vermeil will dull faster than it should. Here's the actual, practical version of how to take care of it (no superstition, just what works).
What you can do without worrying
This is the part people usually overthink. You can:
- Wear it daily, including to work, while travelling, on a normal active day
- Let it get a little damp — light rain or hand-washing won't damage it
- Wear it under light layers of clothing without issue
Gold vermeil is meant to be worn, not stored away for special occasions. If you're treating your DORI pieces like museum artefacts, you're not getting your money's worth.

What actually shortens its life
A few specific things cause most of the damage we see:
Chlorine and saltwater. Pools and the sea are the fastest way to strip a gold layer. Take pieces off before swimming.
Perfume, lotion, and hairspray applied directly onto the piece. These products contain alcohol and chemicals that react with the gold layer over time. Get dressed first, jewellery last.
Harsh scrubbing or abrasive cloths. Vermeil is more delicate than solid gold. Anything gritty or rough can wear through the plating faster than normal use would.
Long-term contact with sweat without cleaning. The occasional gym session is fine. Wearing the same piece through every workout for months without ever cleaning it isn't.
How to actually clean it at home
You don't need anything specialised:
- Use a soft, lint-free cloth — a microfiber cloth works well
- Gently wipe the piece after wearing it, especially if you've been out in heat or humidity
- If it needs more than a wipe, use lukewarm water with a tiny amount of mild soap, then dry immediately and thoroughly
- Avoid soaking pieces, and never use jewellery cleaning solutions designed for solid gold or diamonds — they're often too harsh for plated pieces
That's genuinely it. Anything more aggressive — baking soda pastes, vinegar soaks, ultrasonic cleaners — does more harm than good on vermeil.
Storing it properly
How you store your jewellery between wears matters almost as much as how you wear it:
- Store each piece separately, so metal pieces don't scratch each other
- Use a soft pouch or the original box rather than leaving pieces loose in a drawer
- Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight and humidity — a bathroom shelf is one of the worst places to store it
- If you're not wearing a piece for a while, an airtight pouch with an anti-tarnish strip helps slow oxidation
When it's time for re-plating, not replacing
Even with good care, gold layers do eventually thin with years of regular wear — that's normal, not a defect. That's exactly what DORI's re-plating warranty is for: instead of replacing a piece you love, you can have it re-plated and looking new again. [Read the full warranty breakdown here.]
The short version of all of this: wear it often, keep it away from chlorine and chemicals, wipe it down regularly, store it properly — and it'll keep up with you for years.
